The 48 m high Sule Pagoda is said to be about 2,000 years old and to have been built during the Mahathura era of Buddhism. It has been the focus of Yangon's social and religious activites for centuries. It was used as the centre-point around which the British colonial government constructed the grid-patterned streets of the city. The word 'Sule' is derived from the Mon words 'Kyaik Athok' meaning 'the stupa where a sacred hair relic is enshrined'.
